The Bookshop is a room. "Paperbacks are stacked to the ceiling. Mr. Hatch looks up from behind the counter."
Mr. Hatch is in the Bookshop. "A small man with white hair and ink-stained fingers."
The rare edition is in the Bookshop. "A first edition behind a glass case."
The eviction notice is in the Bookshop. "A legal notice pinned to the counter. The date is tomorrow."
The back room is south of the Bookshop. "A cluttered office. A phone sits off its hook."
The ledger is in the back room. "The shop's accounts. The numbers are not good."
Instead of talking to Mr. Hatch:
say "He looks at you over his glasses. 'Forty years. And tomorrow they put a smoothie bar here.'"
Instead of examining the rare edition:
say "A first printing, signed. The price tag reads: NOT FOR SALE."
Instead of taking the rare edition:
say "Mr. Hatch clears his throat. 'That one's not for sale. It never was.'"
Instead of examining the ledger:
say "Red ink, page after page. Three months back rent. Large but not impossible."
